EXPLORING THE WAIKATO AND BEYOND

Penny Lodge Bed and Breakfast is your gateway to the greater Waikato and Bay of Plenty region.  With easy access to mountains, beaches, caves and lakes, there is something for everyone!

Here are a few ideas to get you started, with distances from Penny Lodge B&B:

Waitomo Caves Village (33 min drive):
The Waitomo caves are one of the highlights of the North Island, with glowworm watching and blackwater rafting for the more adventurous.  Visit Waitomo Caves for more information.

Hobbiton (52 min drive):

Visit the original movie set of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Hobbit movie to get a real taste of Middle Earth!  Hobbiton Tours has more information.

Rotorua (1hr 35min drive):

Just a short drive away is the beautiful lake side city of Rotorua.  Visit the Redwood forest and the Blue and Green lakes, explore the thermal mud pools and geysers, take a ride up the gondola and luge your way down, or partake in any of the many adventure activities on offer.  Visit the Rotorua website for more information.

Tongariro Crossing (2hrs 19min drive):

Thought of as the best one day tramps in New Zealand (and often ranked in the top 10 in the world), this 19.4 kilometer trek over Tongariro in the Central Plateau is a must do.  Jill has completed the tramp numerous times, and is more than willing to share her tips to making the most of the experience.
