PIRONGIA – MORE THAN JUST A MOUNTAIN
Mount Pirongia (959 metres) is an ancient volcano central to the 17,000 hectare Pirongia Forest Park that, with its dramatic skyline, is one of the most distinctive features in the Waikato district.
The mountain offers many walking tracks of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. Visitors can experience majestic forest, melodic birdsong and pristine mountain streams.
Located along SH 39, a popular route for travellers, Pirongia boasts excellent cafes, lovely picnic spots and a wide variety of art and craft ware.
Keep yourself occupied at the Pirongia golf course (with resident Tui), experience Mount Pirongia’s walking tracks or take a tour on a horsedrawn carriage.
PIRONGIA CRAFT DAY
This unmissable occasion is held each year in September on the first Saturday of the school holidays. Only genuine New Zealand made crafts and products are sold at this Craft Day.
PIRONGIA BOXING DAY RACES
Everyone for miles around loads up the chilly bin with Christmas leftovers and turns up to this exciting annual event, to have a flutter on the horses or just to soak up the sunshine and the relaxed but social atmosphere. The Alexander Racing Club is the longest running racing club in New Zealand. The Pirongia Golf Club uses the venue on every other day of the year.
